It was during the summer holidays in 1974, that I left Yaoundé, to Bali Nyonga for vacation. My intention was to buy a plot and return an begin my then teaching job in Yaoundé.

While in Bali Nyonga, I realized that the arrangements being made to purchase the plot failed. The idea of marriage then came to mind. I met Philo (Which means love) at a photo studio in Bali. Immediately I began making serious negotiations to marry her. Little did I know that this was going to be an uphill task. At one point I almost gave up because of the challenges that I was facing in the process. Imagine, after paying my spouse’s bride price, and providing the required oil, salt, amongst other things demanded, the family told me to return to Yaoundé and my spouse will then be brought to me at a date of their choice. While I was trying to contain this embarrassment, I received word from the people that made the arrangement to sell me the plot that I can now bring the money to buy it. Despite the challenges I was facing at that moment, I jokingly replied to them that I had made a better investment with my money. As God wheels things, I was able to come to a consensus with my spouse’s family that she will join me in Yaoundé in a months’ time. Little did I know that this would mark the beginning of our 5 decades of matrimonial story, filled with so many blessings and counting.
To Be Continued…
This all started when I was living with my elder sister of blessed memory who I try to model my life after. Growing up in my teenage years, I was not fascinated by the idea of getting married.

Like my two best friends at the time, my goal was to become a reverend sister. We had started preparing for this vocation and were looking forward to beginning our formation at the convent. But when my aunt learnt that reverend sisters are prohibited from getting married and bearing children, she became very upset and wanted me out immediately. Additionally, I was being pressured to get married as was the norm with most girls around my age at the time. At this point, feeling like I needed a break, I decided to travel to Bali Nyonga to be with my mother for a short while. While living with my mom, I did not feel the pressure to get married or do something that was against my will. One day my cousin and I went to pick up our pictures from a local photo studio. On our way there, I saw a group of guys stirring at us and told my cousin to look at their frightful faces. As we approached the photo studio, I noticed it was my elder brother and his friends. However, one of them stood out to me, because he looked different from the others. He was light skin and tall in appearance. I told my cousin that we should hurry and go get our pictures so we can return home. While at the studio, I was shocked when they showed up behind us asking to show them the pictures. But we left without offering a word back. A few days later, I was at the tap by our house fetching water, when I noticed a familiar face approaching. Wondering why this gentle man was coming too close to me knowingly that I was alone at the tap, he then greeted me in the dialect, and I reluctantly answered. He went straight to the point and said that he loved me and wanted to marry me. I responded that I wasn’t interested in getting married at the time. As time went on, he never gave up, and even got his friends and my own brother to try and convince me to change my mind. But one day while sitting outside meditating on other things with my mother and immediate elder sister, she then asked me why I was rejecting the opportunity to marry such a handsome young gentleman. Trusting her instincts, I then made up my mind to proceed with the negotiations despite my dreams of becoming a reverend sister. Now reflecting on my decision 50 years ago, it is clear to me that as much as I wanted to solely serve God, He had similar plans but with a beautiful family to help do so.
